Dahl Arts Center - Rapid City Arts Council, Rapid City, SD Category: Arts, Antiques, Crafts

Join us in celebrating over 30 west river photographers in our newest exhibit, Western Exposures III: 20th Anniversary Exhibit. This show consists of a group of photographers who are currently residing and working in the Black Hills region. The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, September 15 and will be on view through Saturday, December 2. The reception is from 5 - 7pm with comments from the Curator at 6pm.

Twenty years ago there were only a handful of serious photographers working in relative obscurity scattered throughout Western South Dakota. Some art enthusiasts did not consider photography a legitimate art form at that time. Nevertheless, these dedicated artists practiced a wide variety of techniques and mediums such as palladium, platinum, infrared and photo-collage, to name a few. Others were beginning to explore the world of digital technology and printing while some were involved in more traditional photographic practices.

In 1995 the first proposal for a dedicated photography show was accepted by the Dahl Art Center’s Exhibition committee. Thus the first Western Exposures exhibit opened to a record crowd in January, 1996. A second show, Western Exposures II opened in 2004 with twice the number of photographers as the first exhibit. Now, twenty years later, we have invited over 30 artists to participate and to showcase the diverse photography taking place here in western South Dakota. This exhibit is guest curated by Steve Babbitt, professional photographer and photography professor at Black Hills State University and Katie Adkins, Assistant Curator at the Dahl Arts Center and professional photographer.

Exhibit generously sponsored by BHSU Photography program, South Dakota Arts Council and Rapid City Arts Council.
